The Sisters (James Joyce)

Title: <The Sisters> Author: James Joyce Rating: 7.5 / 10   While reading <The Sisters>, I thought the whole story was paralyzed. First of all, the story suggests there were some problems with Father Flynn, but it did not show what happened in the past. It is just stopped, paralyzed in the present. It is suspicious that he did something wrong, but the only thing readers can do is guess. Second, the characters are paralyzed. Eliza said that there was something queer about Father Flynn, but she did not try to find out what was strange. The boy’s aunt also heard the strangeness of Father Flynn from Eliza, but she did not suggest any suspicion about him. Lastly, I think the church in the story is paralyzed. We can know that there was some problem with Father Flynn, but nobody tries to know the truth. All of the truth about what he did is in a veil, and after his death, he is still praised as a priest although he had probably done a sin. I think the author want...

Gooseberries (Anton Chekhov)

Title: <Gooseberries> Author: Anton Chekhov Rating: 8.5 / 10 I think Ivan had his own strong belief about happiness. He criticizes Nikolay for only thinking about his own happiness. We can know this when Ivan says, "A higher standard of living, overeating and idleness develop the most insolent self-conceit" while thinking about Nikolay, who became rich. He also says that there should be someone who continually reminds a happy man that there are unhappy people. It shows that Ivan thinks someone should work for the world, not for himself. He thinks being happy alone is a sin. I partially agree with Ivan. Nikolay spent his whole life only for one goal, and he was too stingy. He even treated his wife very badly because of the money. Moreover, he became very arrogant after becoming a landowner. His selfish happiness can be blamed. However, I mostly disagree with Ivan because his opinion about happiness is too critical. Working for themselves' happiness is not a bad thin...

The Lady with the Dog (Anton Chekhov)

Title: <The Lady with the Dog> Author: Anton Chekhov Rating: 7 / 10 <The Lady with the Dog> was also a realist novel. It was a story about the love between Dmitiri and Anna, while they both have their own wife or husband. So they were actually cheating on their spouse. The author does not clearly advocate or blame it, so maybe the author wants the readers to decide by themselves. In my opinion, even though their love was true love, they should stop their immoral relationship. Even though their own marriage was not made by their opinion, they agreed to their marriage. They are betraying their spouse's trust. Moreover, Dmitiri even has three children, so he should take responsibility for his family. Also, It was interesting to compare Dmitiri and Anna's attitude, too. Dmitiri did not care about the immorality of his cheating, but Anna kept feeling guilty. However, although Anna felt guilty, she did not stop her love, and she even went to Moscow to meet Dmitiri wh...
