The Boarding House (James Joyce)

Title: <The Boarding House> Author: James Joyce  Rating: 7.5 / 10  In <The Boarding House>, 'marriage' was portrayed quite differently with other classic stories we are used to. Polly and Mr. Doran seems that they will gonna marry, but it does not seem that they are really in love. Mr. Doran worries about his social reputation rather than the relationship between Polly. Polly also was in despair after her mother found out what happened between her and Mr. Doran. I think this unique depiction of marriage means that our real life is not like a romance movie. Reality is complicated. Marriage is not a thing that can be only decided by love.  Mrs. Mooney is a interesting character. She is a strong woman who raised her own business and two children by herself. However, she used Polly to gather more men to her boarding house, and she kinda used Polly to get a good son-in-law. She is very cunning but that was the way she survived from harsh situation. I think this sho...

Eveline (James Joyce)

Title: <Eveline> Author: James Joyce  Rating: 7 / 10 The story shows the miserable life of Irish woman. Even though the author was a man, he well depicted the difficulty of living in Ireland as a woman, and the woman's view on Irish society at the time. I think Eveline's choice was a good decision. Even though she is having hard time in Ireland, it will be hard to settle in a totally new place, too. She has no acquaintance in Buenos Ayres except Frank. Also, Frank is a kind guy to her now, but Frank may turn mean after arriving at Buenos Ayres, just like her father have changed after her mother's death. However, I didn't feel that Eveline's choice was really self-directed. She was paralyzed like a helpless animal at the crossroad even though it was her hope to escape from home. The reason of her choice is not clearly shown in the story, but if her choice was entirely self-directed, she would not be paralyzed. She would have been confident instead. Her choice ...

Araby (James Joyce)

Title: <Araby> Author: James Joyce  Rating: 7.5 / 10 By implying that the Catholic religion made the boy confuse about his feeling, the author criticized Catholic in the story. However, even if the boy didn't get influence from Catholic, he would probably still had confusion about his feeling of love towards Mangan's sister. Kid's definition of love and adult's definition of love is different, and adolescent is in the middle of kid and adult. Thus, it is not a strange thing to have confusion about oneself's feeling when someone is in first love, especially in puberty. So, it can be true that paralysis of strict Catholic added the boy's confusion, but we cannot blame that it's Catholic's 'fault'.  Also, before epiphany, it is written that "we played till our bodies glowed", and after epiphany, it is written that "gazing up into the darkness". When we compare these two sentences, we can see that the author portrayed the in...

The Sisters (James Joyce)

Title: <The Sisters> Author: James Joyce Rating: 7.5 / 10   While reading <The Sisters>, I thought the whole story was paralyzed. First of all, the story suggests there were some problems with Father Flynn, but it did not show what happened in the past. It is just stopped, paralyzed in the present. It is suspicious that he did something wrong, but the only thing readers can do is guess. Second, the characters are paralyzed. Eliza said that there was something queer about Father Flynn, but she did not try to find out what was strange. The boy’s aunt also heard the strangeness of Father Flynn from Eliza, but she did not suggest any suspicion about him. Lastly, I think the church in the story is paralyzed. We can know that there was some problem with Father Flynn, but nobody tries to know the truth. All of the truth about what he did is in a veil, and after his death, he is still praised as a priest although he had probably done a sin. I think the author want...

Gooseberries (Anton Chekhov)

Title: <Gooseberries> Author: Anton Chekhov Rating: 8.5 / 10 I think Ivan had his own strong belief about happiness. He criticizes Nikolay for only thinking about his own happiness. We can know this when Ivan says, "A higher standard of living, overeating and idleness develop the most insolent self-conceit" while thinking about Nikolay, who became rich. He also says that there should be someone who continually reminds a happy man that there are unhappy people. It shows that Ivan thinks someone should work for the world, not for himself. He thinks being happy alone is a sin. I partially agree with Ivan. Nikolay spent his whole life only for one goal, and he was too stingy. He even treated his wife very badly because of the money. Moreover, he became very arrogant after becoming a landowner. His selfish happiness can be blamed. However, I mostly disagree with Ivan because his opinion about happiness is too critical. Working for themselves' happiness is not a bad thin...

The Lady with the Dog (Anton Chekhov)

Title: <The Lady with the Dog> Author: Anton Chekhov Rating: 7 / 10 <The Lady with the Dog> was also a realist novel. It was a story about the love between Dmitiri and Anna, while they both have their own wife or husband. So they were actually cheating on their spouse. The author does not clearly advocate or blame it, so maybe the author wants the readers to decide by themselves. In my opinion, even though their love was true love, they should stop their immoral relationship. Even though their own marriage was not made by their opinion, they agreed to their marriage. They are betraying their spouse's trust. Moreover, Dmitiri even has three children, so he should take responsibility for his family. Also, It was interesting to compare Dmitiri and Anna's attitude, too. Dmitiri did not care about the immorality of his cheating, but Anna kept feeling guilty. However, although Anna felt guilty, she did not stop her love, and she even went to Moscow to meet Dmitiri wh...

The Student (Anton Chekhov)

Title: The Student Author: Anton Chekhov Rating: 6 / 10  Since <The Student> is a realist novel, it contains a story that would actually happen. This made me follow the storyline easily.  However, it was too difficult to understand what the author wanted to say in the book. I read this book 10 times, and also read lots of book reveiws and analyses to understand it. I understood that it means human's feelings, mistakes, and lots of other events repeat through history, but I really couldn't understand why Ivan became optimistic in the end, and what does it mean.  It was interesting to read considering "hero's journey" though. The depiction of miserable reality in the beginning is 'ordinary world', and when Ivan sees widows is 'call to adventure'. His mentor is probably Jesus, and talking with widows is 'special world'. Vasilisa's tear is 'reward', and when Ivan thinks by alone in the end is back to the 'ordinary world...

A Sound of Thunder (Ray Bradbury)

Title: <A Sound of Thunder> (1952) Author: Ray Bradbury  Rating: 8 / 10 <A Sound of Thunder> was very fun and ingenious story. It depicts 'the butterfly effect' by the change of language and even the president after Eckles killed a single butterfly sixty million years ago. After reading it, I searched on internet about the butterfly effect, and I was very surprised that the idea of 'butterfly changing the future' was first introduced in <A Sound of Thunder>. Also, it was interesting to read it considering the 'Hero's Journey'. However, Eckles was not the kind of hero I like. He was too irresponsible and careless. He chose to go time travel but he ran away and eventually got out of the path. It caused gigantic change. Even though he was killed in the end, his fault is irreversible. He shouldn't run away even though he was scared, because it was his choice to go for a dangerous journey. The company was irresponsible too. They should have...
